In the FOOD EXCHANGE GUIDE, foods are categorized into ten food exchange lists based on the Choose Your Foods: Exchange Lists for Diabetes developed by the American Diabetes Association and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Lists have been expanded from the original ADA Exchange Lists to include Combination Foods, Fast Foods, Free Foods, plus Starch, Milk/Yogurt, Meat/Protein, Fruit, Other Carbohydrates, Vegetable and Fat.  Listings include mixed dishes, brand name foods, and prepared foods.

Record all foods and beverages consumed (and their amounts) in the Food & Activity Journal. Check off the boxes as to whether the food was a serving of  Starch, Fruit, Vegetable, Milk/Yogurt, Meat/Protein, or Fat.  Check boxes are also provided for Water consumed and Activity accomplished in 15-minute intervals. Compare your journal to your eating pattern plan. Blood glucose monitoring to record blood glucose levels on each page. Jane currently works for a medical company in the Boston area.
