New York and Mankato, Minnesota — Marking its first-ever corporate acquisition, The Experiment has acquired Appletree Press, which has been publishing health-empowering cookbooks, nutrition and calorie counters, and food journals for more than thirty years. The transaction closed on December 31, 2019.

Appletree Press’s cookbooks and other publications, based on sound medical and nutritional research, provide authoritative and accessible lifestyle guidance to individuals and health professionals seeking to address heart disease, weight management, diabetes, and other health and medical conditions. Its bestselling titles including the award-winning Cooking à la Heart and The Essential Arthritis Cookbook, both of which have sold more than 100,000 copies. Beginning in Spring 2021, The Experiment will publish updated editions of Appletree Press’s titles; Cooking à la Heart, Let’s Cook! Healthy Meals for Independent Living, and The Diabetic Goodie Book are expected to be among its first reissues.

“This is a dream come true!” said Linda Hachfeld, the founder and publisher of Appletree Press. “To find another independent publisher committed to publishing practical, nutrition-focused books is like finding the proverbial ‘needle in a haystack.’ I feel both humbled and blessed to place Appletree Press titles in the capable hands of The Experiment.”

“Linda Hachfeld is a bona fide superwoman. Every book she published at Appletree is premised on the power of eating and living well to address acute and chronic health conditions,” said Matthew Lore, cofounder and CEO of The Experiment. “These books have more currency than ever, and we’re excited to update them, and to sell them across the entire retail marketplace. Best of all about this deal is Linda’s continued editorial involvement—and that she’ll also be working with us to pursue the sort of special sales opportunities that have been a hallmark of Appletree Press’s success.”

Founded by Matthew Lore and Peter Burri in 2008 and having published its first books in 2009, The Experiment’s catalog of more than 300 active titles include four New York Times bestsellers, among which are the first two books published in connection with Forks Over Knives, the world-leading brand devoted to promoting whole-food, plant-based eating. From offices in New York City’s Gramercy neighborhood, The Experiment’s twenty employees publish more than fifty books annually. The Experiment’s books are sold and distributed by Workman Publishing Company in the US, sold by Manda Group and distributed by the University of Toronto Press in Canada, sold by Melia Publishing Services in the UK, and represented by Affirm Press in Australia and New Zealand.
